MRRJ Alberta Release Outcomes
Meherrin River Regional Jail, often shortened to MRRJ, is the active regional adult jail serving Mecklenburg, Brunswick, and Dinwiddie counties. The Alberta facility is not a Mecklenburg-only jail. It holds people whose cases arise in several member jurisdictions, and its records are organized through the regional authority. When a person leaves MRRJ Alberta, the event can be release on bond or recognizance, completion of time served, a court-ordered release, or a transfer. The transaction type is essential because all of those events end one period of MRRJ custody.
A community release and a custodial transfer are different results. Someone may leave for the Virginia Department of Corrections, another local jail, a federal custodian, immigration custody, or a medical destination. Removal from the current list does not identify which result occurred. MRRJ's existing booking and release transaction should supply the date, time, disposition or type, and destination or receiving agency when that data is maintained. The signed court order can then explain the legal authority. If another agency received the person, that agency's record continues the custody chain.

It is a current-custody check, not a release archive, and no verified official recent-release view was found in the jail's navigation. A match supports current listing in that feed. A missing name leaves the reason unresolved because release, transfer, a matching problem, correction, or update timing can each account for the absence.
Use a short, source-based sequence when the actual Alberta event matters. Save the spelling and time of the roster check. Search Virginia Jail VINE for a custody-status event, then review the proper Mecklenburg court system for the bond, dismissal, sentence, or other order. Finally, request the MRRJ release transaction. This process is especially useful for reconnecting with someone, confirming which agency now has custody, or checking the terms of a court-driven release.

Request MRRJ Alberta Release Records
MRRJ Records is the direct route for the Alberta booking and release transaction. Its adopted budget describes Records as maintaining offender records, release dates, and court paperwork. Send a reasonably specific request for an existing record. Include the full legal name, date of birth if known, booking or offender number, booking date, and court case number when available. Ask for the release date and time, release type or disposition, bond transaction if relevant, and destination or receiving agency if the person was transferred.
The request should seek records, not ask staff to investigate or create a narrative. A useful phrasing asks for “existing records sufficient to show the adult booking and termination of MRRJ custody,” followed by the identifying fields. Electronic delivery and a cost estimate can also be requested. Virginia FOIA generally calls for a response within five working days through production, a lawful withholding explanation, a referral or no-record response, partial production, or notice that more time is needed. Actual production may take longer under an allowed extension.

Virginia law permits reasonable charges for access, search, copying, and supplies at the lowest reasonable cost. A requester may ask for an estimate, and a deposit may be required if the likely charge exceeds $200. A narrow request reduces uncertainty. It also helps MRRJ identify the right booking when names are shared.

MRRJ Alberta Release History
The Alberta jail opened on July 1, 2012, as the main facility of the Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority. That history is not just local color. It separates the active Alberta operation from the authority's Mecklenburg/Boydton satellite, which opened later and has been temporarily closed since January 6, 2021. It also prevents confusion with the former Mecklenburg Correctional Center, a VADOC prison that closed in March 2012. Those sites belong to different custodians and record systems.
The MRRJ history identifies the regional members and Alberta opening. Older paperwork may use a facility name that now has a different status. Confirm the facility, operator, and event date before choosing a search path. Current Mecklenburg adult detainees are generally handled through Alberta, while historical Boydton files remain a regional-jail records question. Historical state-prison files belong with VADOC and the sentencing court.
Read MRRJ Release Totals Carefully
MRRJ's FY2026 adopted budget reports 1,745 bookings and 1,861 releases for FY2025 actual operations. It also reports 1,108 local-agency transports, 76 DOC transports, and 93 medical transports for that period. These are regional authority totals. They are not counts of unique Mecklenburg residents, and they cannot be presented as a tally of people who returned to the Mecklenburg community.
The distinction explains why a named transaction is stronger than a broad annual number. A “release” total can include event categories whose practical result is movement to another setting. Transport data also show that MRRJ manages many custody transitions. When confirming one person, read the release type and destination. Do not infer the outcome from aggregate data, a roster change, or a family report alone.
The budget reports 1,828 bookings and 1,956 releases for FY2024, then projects 1,939 bookings and 2,068 releases for FY2026. Those figures show turnover across the whole authority. They do not supply a recent-release feed, a public retention period, or a release time for any person.
MRRJ Alberta Release Logistics
No reviewed MRRJ source publishes an ordinary community-release time, exit door, family waiting area, property-return procedure, or bus route for Alberta. Confirm those details through the main jail line or Records before travel. Release timing can depend on lawful requirements, court paperwork, processing, and resolution of other holds. The research does not support a claim that releases occur at midnight, on the next workday, or through a specific entrance.
State-prison rules do not fill that gap. VADOC publishes separate procedures for its own institutions, but those procedures do not govern this regional jail. Applying them to MRRJ would give families a false expectation. Alberta logistics must come from Alberta staff.

Trace MRRJ Alberta Release Transfers
A destination field controls the next step. If it says VADOC, use the Virginia Inmate and Supervisee Locator with the seven-digit DOC ID when known. The locator covers active state custody and community supervision, but it is not a permanent archive of every fully discharged person. If another local jail is named, contact that facility. For federal custody, use the BOP locator and the federal court record. For an ICE transfer, use the detainee locator promptly because its released-person coverage is limited.
Virginia Jail VINE belongs to the local and regional jail side of the chain. VADOC uses a separate state victim-notification system called NAAVI for eligible state-prison events. A transfer can require a new registration. Neither notification platform replaces the MRRJ transaction or signed release papers.
