Boydton Satellite Release Status
The MRRJ Mecklenburg/Boydton satellite has been temporarily closed since January 6, 2021. The FY2026 adopted budget gives no reopening timeline. No ordinary present-day release should be attributed to the closed satellite. A person arrested in Mecklenburg now may still encounter Boydton in a magistrate listing or an old address, but that does not establish that the jail units are open or that a current detainee is held there.
Current Mecklenburg adult detainees are generally handled through Meherrin River Regional Jail's Alberta facility. The regional jail authority remains the records custodian for historical Boydton booking and release transactions. Start with the date. An event before closure may be tied to the satellite. A recent event should be checked through MRRJ Current Offenders, Virginia Jail VINE, the court record, and Alberta Records, with each source used only for the fact it can establish.
Boydton Satellite Release History
The Boydton satellite opened in January 2013 and had 104 beds. It followed the opening of MRRJ's main Alberta jail in 2012. That short sequence explains why older files may call Boydton the “Mecklenburg facility” even though the authority's current active jail operation is associated with Alberta. Historical records can lawfully retain the facility name that was accurate when the event occurred.
The MRRJ history provides the authority background, while the FY2026 budget supplies the controlling closure detail. Use both. The older opening fact does not cancel the later status. Likewise, the continued appearance of the Boydton address on an official contact page does not prove current incarceration or current release processing.
Another closed facility adds to the risk of confusion. Mecklenburg Correctional Center was a separate VADOC maximum-security prison near Boydton and closed in March 2012. It was not this regional-jail satellite. A state-prison file belongs with VADOC and the sentencing court, while a Boydton satellite jail file belongs with MRRJ.
Confirm Historical Boydton Releases
A historical release question needs an event-level record. MRRJ's current JailTracker is labeled “Current Offenders” and does not function as a Boydton history archive. A no-result today says nothing reliable about a release that occurred at the satellite years ago. It also does not identify bond, time served, court order, transfer, or another disposition.
Ask MRRJ for the existing booking and release transaction tied to the Boydton satellite. Give the person's full legal name, date of birth if known, booking or offender number, approximate custody dates, and case number. Request the facility name, admission or booking date, release date and time, release type or disposition, and destination or receiving agency. The destination distinguishes return to the community from transfer into another form of custody.
- Fix the date range and confirm that the record refers to the Boydton satellite.
- Search the proper Mecklenburg court for the case and signed release authority.
- Send MRRJ a focused request for the historical booking and release transaction.
- Compare the jail event with the court order rather than calculating a date from the sentence.
- Follow any named receiving agency to complete the custody chain.

Boydton Release Records Contact
Send a historical satellite request to MRRJ's FOIA officer, not to the closed jail unit. Records maintains offender records, release dates, and court paperwork for the authority. A request should describe an existing record with enough detail to locate it. Ask for electronic copies and a cost estimate if cost is a concern.

Use the official MRRJ FOIA route. State clearly that the request concerns the Mecklenburg/Boydton satellite and provide the historical date range.
Virginia FOIA generally requires an initial response within five working days. The response may provide records, explain a lawful withholding, refer the request, state that no record was found, provide part with redactions, or invoke an allowed extension. Charges are limited to actual and reasonable costs for search, access, copying, and supplies. A deposit may be required when the expected amount exceeds $200.
Note: The old Boydton phone and address identify the location but do not prove that release operations have resumed.
Current Mecklenburg Release Search
For present-day Mecklenburg adult custody, start with the active MRRJ regional system. The MRRJ home page links to Current Offenders. That roster answers whether the person appears in the current feed. It does not answer why a name is absent and must never be labeled a release list.
Virginia Jail VINE can show a custody-status event from a participating local or regional jail. The Mecklenburg General District or Circuit Court case can show the bond, disposition, or sentence that supplied legal authority. MRRJ Records can show when jail custody ended and where the person went. Those three channels answer different parts of the question. They work best together.

Boydton Magistrate Is Not Custody
Official local material still lists a magistrate at 600 Prison Road in Boydton. Magistrates conduct bail hearings and issue bonds. That role is separate from operating jail units. The nearby listing cannot establish that the satellite reopened, that a named person was held there, or that a release took place from the location.
A bond is authorization for pretrial release under stated conditions. MRRJ must still complete lawful processing and resolve other holds. The court or magistrate record can explain why release was authorized, but the jail transaction supplies the actual end of MRRJ custody. Another detainer can also result in transfer rather than community return.
Call before travel if a magistrate service is needed. Do not go to the old jail address expecting a present-day detainee release. For jail operations, use the active MRRJ main number and confirm the correct location with staff.
Separate Boydton Release Record Names
Three similar labels can appear in Mecklenburg research: MRRJ Alberta, the MRRJ Mecklenburg/Boydton satellite, and Mecklenburg Correctional Center. Only Alberta is the active regional jail. The satellite is temporarily closed. Mecklenburg Correctional Center was a VADOC prison and is historical. Selecting by name alone can direct a request to the wrong government body.
Read the operator field on any record. “MRRJ” or “regional jail authority” points to the regional system. “VADOC” or a DOC number points to the state system. Then check the event date against the facility's operating status. The same town or county name does not make two institutions interchangeable.

Read Boydton Release Outcomes Narrowly
Historical wording should identify only what the evidence proves. “MRRJ records show Boydton custody ended on the stated date by the listed type” is stronger than claiming the person was free. A transfer destination can show that another custodian immediately took control. A court dismissal can end one charge without resolving another hold. A bond can permit release while the case remains pending.
If a record names VADOC, check VADOC's current locator and available release paperwork. A no-result there may be consistent with full discharge, but it does not prove it because the locator focuses on active custody and supervision. If another jail is named, contact that jail. Use BOP or ICE only when the historical record points to those systems.
No ordinary release-time rule, exit door, property process, waiting area, or transit route was found for the closed satellite. Do not borrow current VADOC logistics or Alberta assumptions. Historical release details should come from the transaction itself.
Note: Facility status and record custody are separate, so closure does not erase the historical records route through MRRJ.
