Mecklenburg Center Release Status
Mecklenburg Correctional Center closed in March 2012. VADOC statistical material supplies that date. The former maximum-security prison near Boydton is historical only. It does not accept prisoners, process current releases, or provide a present facility contact desk. Any page or directory that presents it as active should be checked against the current VADOC facilities directory.
A record may still correctly name Mecklenburg Correctional Center when the confinement took place before closure. That does not make the old site the present records destination. VADOC and the sentencing court are the appropriate custodians for historical confinement, sentence, release, and discharge questions. Identify the person, DOC number, court, and date range before contacting either source.
Mecklenburg Release History
The facility's name is easy to mix up with Mecklenburg County's regional-jail arrangements. Mecklenburg Correctional Center was a VADOC state prison. Meherrin River Regional Jail is a separate regional authority serving Mecklenburg, Brunswick, and Dinwiddie counties. Its main active jail is at Alberta. The MRRJ Mecklenburg/Boydton satellite opened in 2013, after the state prison closed, and has itself been temporarily closed since January 6, 2021.
Those dates and operators provide a quick records test. A pre-March 2012 VADOC file may concern the correctional center. A regional jail entry from 2013 onward may concern the Boydton satellite. A current Mecklenburg adult jail matter generally points to MRRJ Alberta. The town and county references are not enough. Read the agency, facility, DOC or booking number, and event date.
Keeping the status visible protects against a serious mistake. An old institution name can remain in a court docket or personal release paper long after the physical site stops operating. The record remains historical evidence, but it cannot show current custody without a newer source.
Search Mecklenburg Historical Releases
Begin with the seven-digit DOC ID if it is known. The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator accepts that identifier or the first three letters of the first name plus the full last name. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. The locator is useful when a former prisoner remains in current VADOC custody or community supervision.
Its coverage is not a permanent archive. A fully discharged person may no longer appear. A no-result can also reflect spelling, timing, or a different system. State the negative finding with the search date and do not turn it into a claim that the person was never confined or that every term ended. For a historical release, proceed to release papers, VADOC guidance, and the sentencing court.

- Search VADOC by DOC ID, then by the required name fields.
- Record the exact result labels and retrieval date.
- Find the sentencing court's signed order and any later amended order.
- Seek the existing VADOC release or discharge record through the proper authorized route.

Mecklenburg Release Records Contact
VADOC is the agency contact for records created by the former state prison. The department relies on Virginia exemptions that permit withholding of imprisonment and supervision records from broad public disclosure. A focused inquiry can still identify the proper records unit or an authorized path. Release documents held by the person and the sentencing court's signed orders may be more accessible.

Provide the full name, DOC ID, former facility, confinement dates, sentencing court, and the existing record sought. Do not ask VADOC to calculate a new release history or create a narrative. A narrow request for a specific release or discharge document is easier to route than a demand for an entire offender file.
When contacting the court, request the signed sentencing order and any later order that changed the term or release authority. Online case information is a useful index, but it does not replace the signed order. It can also omit operational credits and the exact physical release time.
Mecklenburg Discharge Record Evidence
An actual state-prison release creates stronger evidence than an old directory or estimated date. VADOC's facility-release policy says a person who satisfies a state sentence is discharged or leaves on parole and receives a notification-of-release letter. The person signs an Order of Release and, when applicable, Conditions of Probation or Conditions of Parole. Historical documents with those titles can identify what happened after Mecklenburg Correctional Center custody.
Final discharge and supervised release are not the same. Parole is conditional release from a prison term for a person eligible under Virginia law. Post-release supervision continues after incarceration. Probation can be imposed without a prison release. Read the document rather than infer the outcome from the presence of a district office or a court sentence.

Verify Mecklenburg Release Dates
A sentence end date cannot be reconstructed reliably by adding days to the court term. Virginia has different Good Conduct Allowance and Earned Sentence Credit systems based mainly on offense date and sentence. Computation can also reflect jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, amended orders, class level, discipline, and detainers. Older Mecklenburg Correctional Center cases may fall under rules different from current cases.
VADOC's time-computation page explains when local authorities or VADOC calculate dates. Good Conduct Allowance generally concerns older felonies and older misdemeanors, while Earned Sentence Credits apply to post-1994 felonies. The details are offense-specific. A broad “serve 85 percent” rule is not a safe calculator for every historical sentence.
Use the computed date only as one field. Actual release is confirmed by the release record, signed papers, and any receiving-agency or supervision record. A detainer can cause a transfer even when the VADOC sentence reaches its release point. The conclusion should name the agency whose custody ended and the next documented status.
Trace Mecklenburg Release Transfers
A person could leave the former state prison without entering the community. Another VADOC institution might receive the person, or a local, federal, or immigration custodian might act on a detainer. The historical release paperwork should be checked for a destination or receiving agency. That agency's admission or custody record then continues the chain.
For a later VADOC location, use the state locator and preserve the exact labels. For a federal transfer, use the BOP locator and the federal court docket. For immigration custody, use ICE records with care because the public locator's released-person window is short and does not reconstruct an old 2012 event. An old ICE no-result has little value as proof.

Current Mecklenburg Facility Distinctions
Baskerville Correctional Center is the current VADOC institution in Mecklenburg County identified by the research. It has its own state locator and release process. MRRJ Alberta is the active regional jail for Mecklenburg and two other member counties. Neither should be used as a substitute history source for Mecklenburg Correctional Center.
Likewise, the MRRJ Boydton satellite is not the former state prison. It is a regional-jail site with a different operator and later opening date. It has been temporarily closed since 2021, while the VADOC correctional center closed in 2012. The two closure facts should remain next to their names wherever current status matters.
When an older source says only “Mecklenburg,” identify the agency before drawing a conclusion. A DOC ID, VADOC letterhead, or state sentence points toward the former correctional center. An MRRJ booking number or regional-jail transaction points toward the regional authority. If the source remains ambiguous, report that uncertainty and ask the relevant records units to identify the custodian.
No present release times, property process, transport arrangements, or visitor information should be given for the former prison. Those operational facts ceased to be current when the institution closed. Historical records, not present-day logistics, are the proper focus.
